Island Paradise (Part 2)

Here's the second half of my trip to Puerto Rico.

One of the restaurants we visited many times was B for Burro in San Juan. They had the most delicious veggie quesadillas I've ever had. They also had some really cool Cinco de Mayo decorations and masks on the walls.

Tresbe's pineapple and aioli chicken wings.

On Thursday we went on a guided tour of Puerto Rico's rain forest - El Yunque. We were able to swim in a river, hike to some waterfalls, and later take a tour of the bio-luminescent bay.

View from the top of the tower.

A two-story Forever 21 in the Old San Juan Mall of America.

A Gorgonzola burger with caramelized onions from Mango's.

Saturday night we went salsa dancing at the Marriott hotel.

Some frozen yogurt with chocolate shavings from Yogenfruz, which we visited manyyy times.

Overall, Puerto Rico was a beautiful and amazing island. If you visit, here are some activities and restaurants you have to check out!

Attractions:
Hiking through El Yunque rain forest
Bio-luminescent bay tour
Beaches of San Juan
Shopping in Old San Juan
Salsa dancing (We went to the Marriott which was fun, but it gets very crowded late at night)
The two forts in Old San Juan (we went to Castillo San Cristobal)

Restaurants:
B for Burro
Mango's
Tresbe
Yogenfrüz
Cafeteria Mallorca (Old San Juan)

Island Paradise (Part 1)

During March 18-27 I was able to travel to the exquisite island of Puerto Rico with my class for a senior trip. Also known as the "Isla de Encanto", Puerto Rico was acquired by the U.S. from Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 during the Spanish-American War. Now that you've had that fun little history lesson, here's some pictures documenting the first half of our trip.

Packed and ready to go!

My friend Victoria at the beautiful beach right next to our house.

This is a typical Puerto Rican dish called "mallorca." It's basically a ham and cheese sandwich made on sweet bread and covered with powdered sugar. It sounds kind of sketchy, but it was so delicious. We all tried it at several different places, but Cafeteria Mallorca in Old San Juan definitely had the best!

The colorful streets of the capitol city  - Old San Juan.

La Fortaleza a.k.a. The Governor's Palace.

Hitting the Slopes

Right after Valentine's Day this year I was able to travel to North Carolina for a ski trip with my youth group.  I actually ended up snowboarding instead of skiing but it was an amazing experience. We stayed near Butler, Tennessee and drove up to Beech Mountain where the weather was insane. It got to a point where we could barely see three feet in front of us because it was snowing so hard.

The view from the third story window of my room.

My friend Joy (right) and I at the top of  Beech Mountain.

It's hard to tell because of the snow, but there's actually a mountain in the back.

Saturday we went snowboarding, but on Sunday we went to a different mountain and went ice skating.
