The Rope Braid

This is a ridiculously simple hairstyle to pull together and the end result is a simple yet cool look for your summer days and nights. Here's a few pictures for inspiration and instructions from Lauren Conrad's Beauty.

Step 1: Pull your hair back into a ponytail and secure it with an elastic.*
Step 2: Divide your hair into two sections.
Step 3: Twist each section. The key is to twist both sections in the same direction.
Step 4: Wrap the two section around each other, in the opposite direction you twisted.  (So, if you twisted each strand to the right, wrap around each other to the left.) You will probably have to keep twisting as you wok your way down each section, twisting as you wrap.
Step 5: Secure the end with an elastic.

*I usually skip this step but it can make it a little easier to twist the sections.

Enjoy!

Almond-Crusted Scallops

This is the perfect dish for a summer night. It's light and filling but still rich and creamy. I paired it with a salad topped with fresh veggies and Italian dressing.

Almond-Crusted Scallops

Serves 2-3
Preheat oven to: 375

Ingredients:

  • 5 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme
  • pinch of salt
  • pinch of ground black pepper
  • dash of ground nutmeg
  • 1 pound sea or bay scallops, drained
  • 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped almonds
  • Hot cooked pasta
Directions:
  1. Melt 4 tablespoons butter over medium heat in a cast-iron or ovenproof skillet. Stir in wine, cream, thyme, salt, pepper and nutmeg.
  2. Add scallops, turning to coat. Remove from heat.
  3. Melt remaining 1 tablespoon butter in a small bowl in the microwave, and stir in panko and nuts.
  4. Sprinkle mixture over scallops and bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown.
  5. Serve with hot cooked pasta and garnish with extra thyme and whole almonds.

2. IPhone 5 Case

Total honesty time: I'm seriously considering upgrading to the 5 just so I can get this ...

3. Printed Summer Shorts

I'm also seeing a ton of shorts with big and bold prints. Pair them with a light and neutral top for a simple summer look.

Hollister Beach Shorts

4. Rompers

Rompers are a cool, effortless, no-fuss piece for any summer wardrobe. From pretty florals to simple and clean embroidery to ruffles in nautical colors, rompers are a must on my list.

June Inspiration

Here's a few images I've been looking to for inspiration as we transition into summer.

If you want a perfect low-maintenance and cool style that's also practical and bohemian, a simple side-braid is the way to go.

Living in Florida, and less than 5 minutes from the beach, I'm ashamed to say I've never even attempted surfing. Definitely a "to-do" on my summer list.

Whether it's a cottage in the mountains or a shack on a tropical island, summer always inspires me to travel.

When it comes to food, nothing says summer quite like sipping something fruity straight out of a coconut...and ice cream.... lots and lots of ice cream.

But you know what's even better? A combination of the two...

...that and tossing back a nice cold coke. Bonus points for the old school bottles.

Another goal for me this summer is to ride my bike more often, even if it's just a quick cruise around the block. It's a great alternative to running under the hot sun.

And finally, these silk printed shorts, perfect for any tropical getaway.

Kaleidoscope Colors

I've seen this crayon art on just about every popular website out there, so I thought it was about time I gave it a try. I decided to go with the original rainbow style, but my friend who made one with me went with a blue and white theme.

Tools: Canvas, Crayons, Glue Gun, Hair Dryer

Start by laying out the crayons across the top of the canvas in the color scheme you want.

Glue down the crayons one by one. I'm a little OCD and had to make all the "Crayola" labels face up.

Use the hair dryer to melt the tips of the crayons. It took a while for the crayons to start melting and drip.

I'd recommend working in small sections at a time. Once the crayons are warm it's easier to go back and melt them more.

Lay down something under the canvas and wear clothes you don't mind getting wax on. Make sure you cover a large are because the wax flies a lot farther than we thought it would.

The finished product.

Since you control how far down the colors go, you can leave white space for words or drawings.

Sunday Seven

Here's seven things I'm loving this week...

Lilly Pulitzer Planner
She will be dearly missed, but her legacy lives on.

Evening walks on the beach with friends.
Something I will miss once everyone leaves for college.

My shorts collection
From left to right, top to bottom: New York & Co.; Hollister; Abercrombie & Fitch; American Eagle; Rue 21; Hollister
An absolute necessity since summer has officially arrived here in Florida.

The Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie via Cupcakes and Cashmere
These delicious cookies from Emily Schuman's book are my new go-to dessert. They're that perfect combo of crispy edges and a gooey center. (at least the first batch was; I burned the second batch...)

A new way to display my earrings.
Not only a cute decoration for my dresser, but a practical way to have easy access to my favorite pairs.

Bath & Body Works from left to right: Coconut Leaves; Tiki Beach; Caribbean Escape
It seems crazy to me to burn candles when its 95 degrees outside, but these smell so good I just might have to crank up the A/C and make an exception.

Oreo
Aspen

I found these two precious kittens hiding in our shed. Unfortunately, my dog doesn't take kindly to other pets so we had to take them to the Humane Society.

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day Weekend!
